Working with a bright sky

Most people who open Iyundhu will not see the Milky Way. That is not a moral failure. It is LED street lighting and a million windows. The remedy is not despair. It is picking targets that punch through.

The city list

Moon. Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn. The ISS. Occultations. Eclipses. Double stars with contrast — Albireo, Mizar. Open clusters if you have binoculars and a park. That is already a lifetime.

Galaxies and nebulae need dark. Do not buy a giant Dobsonian to use from a balcony facing a billboard. Use the planet board and the Moon calendar. Save the faint fuzzies for a weekend drive.

Small tactics

Stand in a shadow so a lamp is not in your eye. Let your eyes sit for fifteen minutes. A hood or even a jacket over your head at the eyepiece helps more than a filter you do not understand. Broadband “light pollution filters” on small telescopes are often a disappointment; narrowband filters are for emission nebulae and a mount that tracks.

Bortle is a scale, not a personality. If your sky is a 7, you can still have a 2 on a mountain three hours away twice a year. Those two nights will recalibrate what you think is possible.
